can't find the right furniture? make it yourself. kind of...
Sometimes, in the course of a big project, changes get made that result in an expensive little leftover. I made a change to add a wine fridge to the wet bar area in the midcentury house remodel, AFTER i'd ordered the cabinets, so I had this lovely glossy piece taking up space in the garage. I also had a home office being finished - only took 8 years! - so it needed some furnishings. I ordered two simple walnut-veneered panels from my cabinetmaker, and used the leftover handles from the remodel. The finishing touch is that gorgeous piece of granite - I have a go-to stone fabricator that always has great 'scraps' to rifle through. They edged it for me, and all that was left was to assemble it all, which really only took a few minutes, with a little help from a friend, after we finished painting the room. I love this little project because it combines my love for making furniture with my intense hatred for throwing things out, with a side of turning a mistake into a victory. and now we have a cabinet big enough to store stacks of 11X17 paper, too.
